between the two countries. Dozens of militant Cuban exile groups vehemently opposed Carter's policies, although a number of other exiles supported them. Among the supporters was a group of young exiles known as the Antonio Maceo Brigade who traveled to Cuba to observe the revolution in action; for three weeks in December 1977, they worked on a housing project, inspected factories and schools, and visited relatives. When they returned to the United States, the exile press denounced them as traitors in the war for Cuba's freedom and called them agents of the Castro regime 10 The brigade was accused of filing reports with the Cuban government on Eliseo Alberto, son of a well-known Cuban poet. Even though both men supported the revolution, the government security officials coerced Alberto to spy on his own father.
